Brief Bio

I have obtained BSc (Special Zoology- 1974) and PhD (Ecology-1986) from Madurai Kamaraj University and MSc (Marine Biology-1976) from Annamalai University. Subsequently, I have worked as a Research Associate at TERI , Puducherry and Madurai Kamaraj University and joined as a faculty at the Salim Ali School of Ecology, Pondicherry University by July 1987.

I served as a visiting Faculty at the National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Hyderabad in 2004; contributing faculty to MSc (sustainable development) from June 2005 to 2010 (Pondicherry University); coordinator for MSc (sustainable development) from April 2008 (Pondicherry University) to April 2010; member Secretary, Pondicherry University Renewable Energy & sustainability Cell from 2015 till April 2018 . I have taught interdisciplinary courses such as Environmental management, Ecotourism in Protected areas, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Sustainable Development - theory and practice and Ecology & Environmental Sciences for tourism at the Post Graduate level for over three decades.

My professional interests/expertise include-Sustainable Water/Solid Waste Management, Agro-Ecology, Sustainable Tourism, Ecotourism, Eco-entrepreneurship, Environmental & Social Impact Assessment, Environmental & Social Management Planning and Green/Sustainable/Smart Campus or City strategies with special emphasis on climate change resilience and sustainability. Under my supervision, 18 students successfully defended their PhD theses and more than 60 students submitted their theses for their MSc degrees. I have published 56 peer-reviewed journal articles, 2 books and 26 book chapters. Another book on Tourism Ecology is in its final phase of completion. I have successfully completed 14 action research projects and made about 60 presentations in National and International Conferences/Symposia in India, Netherlands and USA. I have organised three national workshops and three international conferences.

I am serving as the Chief Editor of Grassroots Journal of Natural Resources, Canada, Editor of International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development, Inderscience Publishers and Editor of Journal of Tourism Management Research. I am the Member of the Commission on Ecosystem Management (CEM), IUCN, Switzerland, IUCN CEM Ecosystem Governance; IUCN CEM Coastal and Marine Ecosystems; IUCN CEM Urban Ecosystems; IUCN CEM Agro-ecosystems; IUCN CEM Ecosystem Restoration; IUCN CEM Sustainable Use and Management of Ecosystems; a member of the Puducherry Planning Authority Environment Cell from January 2018; a recipient of the Indo-German cultural exchange program during May-August 1993 and Canadian Studies Faculty Research Fellowship, May-June 1996.
