Government College Chamba is one of the oldest premier educational institutions of Himachal Pradesh. The college was established by the Govt. of Himachal Pradesh on 15th May, 1958 as a co-educational college in the historical Akhand Chandi Palace with handful students and teachers and it is located in the admist of historical Chamba town. After 57 years of it’s existence, in 2015 the college partially shifted to new campus at Sultanpur which is about four kms from the old campus. Presently, the college is NAAC B+ accredited and committed to provide quality education to the youth of even across the district. Prime aim of the college is to provide equal opportunities for acquiring skills necessary for facing the challenges of fast- changing modern world to ensure livelihood, wider range of career options and better quality of life and college is consistently working to enhance the standards of its students and staff by delivering value added knowledge. Presently, the college is a well-established and functioning and having more than 4000 students in all streams of learning, i.e., Arts, Science, Commerce and Vocational and affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University Shimla. There are 41 Associate/Assistant Professors, Principal, Librarian, Lab attendants, Admin staff. Courses like; Computer Application, Journalism and Mass Communication, Bachelor in Vocational, BBA, BCA, PGDCA and Education are functioning in the college. Presently, 19 subjects other than commerce are being taught in the college.
The college is fully funded by government of Himachal Pradesh and is recognized by University Grants Commission, New Delhi under section 2 (f) and 12 B of UGC Act -1956. The institution is capable to cater the academic requirement of any academic institution at global level. Earlier, through Department of Sociology, the college had collaboration with University of Turku, Finland, Bordeaux Institute of Cultural Anthropology, Belgium, Asia Climate Change Education Centre, Jeju South Korea and had also arranged some lectures by London School of Economics, University of Leipzig, University of Turku etc. and also facilitating many Indian and foreign institutions for academic and cultural exchanges. The institution believes in collaborative academic growth, and extending collaborative support to alien institutions around the globe and intend to work in future also.
